The ice hockey league 1991/92 was carried out as in the previous season in a group south with 16 participants and a group north with 11 participants. ETC Timmendorfer Strand became the champions of the league and won the final against the champions of the southern group TuS Geretsried .

Due to the introduction of the single-track 2. Bundesliga for the 1992/93 season , there was no promoted player from the league this season. Three teams from the lower intermediate round of the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga took part in the final round of the Oberliga Süd and the qualifying round of the Oberliga Nord, four more were relegated for the 1992/93 season .

Oberliga Nord

Attendees

The ESC Ahaus had stopped playing after the closure of its ice rink. The EC Diez-Limburg had withdrawn into the Hessenliga . The teams of the EHC Unna and the Schalker Haie were granted a license after a license refusal at the second attempt.

Shortly before the start of the season, the GSC Moers withdrew its team from the league due to financial problems.

The preliminary round was played in two regional groups, North and West, with (planned) six teams as a double round. The best seven teams qualified for the final round (single round) with two second division teams, the rest played a placement round (double round). The first five of the finals qualified directly for the qualification for the Oberliga Nord 1992/93, the first also played in the Oberliga finals . The remaining teams, including those in the placement round, were able to qualify for the qualifying round through relegation games with six regional league teams.

Relegation matches

The last six teams in the upper league could, in the order of their placement, choose an opponent from the first two of the regional league north, west and middle, against whom they fought to remain in the upper league. The winners of the duels then played in the upper league qualifying round North, while the losers took part in the qualification for the Regionalliga Nord.

Qualifying round for the Oberliga Nord

In addition to the qualified upper division teams, the teams in places 7 to 9 of the lower intermediate round of the 2nd Bundesliga took part, insofar as they came from the north. These were the ESC Wolfsburg and the Grefrather EC .

The EHC Unna withdrew from the game on February 12th after two defeats. The Grefrather EC stopped playing on March 20th - after 7 wins, 2 draws and 6 defeats. After none of the northern teams were relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga, all other participants in the single round qualified for the Oberliga Nord in 1992/93 , with Hamburger SV and EC Dorsten doing without. In addition, the Oberliga-Nord was increased by interested regional league players and Grefrather EV, the successor club to Grefrather EC.

Oberliga Süd

The 16 teams played a single round as a preliminary round. The best teams of the preliminary round played the final round with the worst southern clubs of the lower intermediate round of the 2nd Bundesliga, the winners of which qualified for the upper division finals. The remaining teams in the preliminary round played the qualification for the Oberliga Süd in two groups with the best teams in the Regionalliga Süd .

Finals
