Valery Ivanovich Choroschkowskyj ( Ukrainian Валерій Іванович Хорошковський , born January 1, 1969 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian manager, media entrepreneur and politician. From March 2010 to January 2012 he was head of the Ukrainian domestic intelligence service SBU . After being appointed Minister of Finance of Ukraine on January 18, 2012, he was First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine from February 14 to December 14, 2012. Until he left the Ukrainian government at the end of 2012, he was considered one of the most influential people in the country.

Life

Choroschkowskyj graduated from the Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev with a degree in law . In the following years he initially worked as an entrepreneur and investor. In 1998 he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada , but lost his seat in parliament in the 2002 elections.

In December 2002, the then Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych appointed him Minister of Economy of Ukraine. After disputes about the future economic course of the country, he resigned from this office in January 2004. After his resignation from the office of minister, he first became vice-president and later president of the steel company Evraz . In 2005, he acquired the majority of the influential Ukrainian media company "Inter Media" and in the following years expanded the television channel "Inter" to become the largest television broadcaster in Ukraine. In this context, Choroschkowskyj was repeatedly accused of striving for a dominant position and wanting to displace competitors.

Khorozhkovskyi became a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine in 2006 and was the chairman of the Customs Services of Ukraine from December 2007 to May 2009. At that time he was considered a confidante of the then President Viktor Yushchenko and an opponent of the then Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko .

In March 2010, the newly elected President Yanukovych appointed him head of the Ukrainian domestic intelligence service SBU . Khoroschkowskyj was repeatedly accused of using this position to put pressure on journalists critical of the government and to represent the interests of his media holding company. In this connection he stated that he had given up his influence on the editorial policy of "Inter", whereby he remained the owner of the media holding company, but announced that he would sell his shares. On February 1, 2013, Khoroschkowskyj sold his shares in Inter Media Group Limited to the influential entrepreneur Dmytro Firtash . The Ukrainian media speculated about the circumstances and background of this transaction.

On January 19, 2012, Khoroschkowskyj was initially appointed Finance Minister of Ukraine and released from his position as head of the SBU. On February 14, 2012, Yanukovych appointed him First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, in which position he replaced Andrij Kljujew . In the course of the reshuffle of the cabinet in December 2012 after the parliamentary elections , Khoroshkovsky declared his resignation from the government in protest against the reappointment of Mykola Azarov as prime minister. According to media reports, Khoroschkowskyj is staying mainly in France and Monaco after leaving the government .
