Ivan Hennadijowytsch Bakanow ( Ukrainian Іван Геннадійович Баканов ; born May 2, 1974 in Krywyj Rih , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian statesman.

He was the chairman of the Sluha Narodu party from December 2, 2017 to May 27, 2019 and has been the head of the Security Service of Ukraine since August 29, 2019 . He is also a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine .

Life

Ivan Bakanov was born in Krywyj Rih in the Ukrainian Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and was a childhood friend of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Selenskyj . They lived in the same house and went to the same school. He graduated from the Kiev National Wadym-Hetman University of Economics in 1997 and the Academy of Labor, Social Relations and Tourism ( Академія праці, соціальних відносин і туризму ), also in Kiev .

From January 25, 2013 he headed the cabaret company “Kwartal 95” ( ТОВ “Квартал 95” , in German “95th block of flats” ) and from December 27, 2013 the television production company “Studio Kwartal 95 GmbH” ( ТОВ Студія “Квартал 95 » ), Which produced the political comedy series Servants of the People , in which Volodymyr Zelensky played the President of Ukraine. Between December 2, 2017 and May 27, 2019 he was party leader of the Sluha narodu (in German servant of the people ) party founded by Volodymyr Selenskyj of the same name . During the presidential election campaign in Ukraine in 2019 , he headed Zelenskyi's election campaign staff.

After Zelenskyi became president, he appointed him first deputy head of the SBU on May 22, 2019, where he headed Department K for anti-corruption and organized crime of the Central Directorate of the Security Service. A week later, on May 28, 2019, he became a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine and a day later also interim chief of the SBU, having been awarded the rank of lieutenant a few days earlier in order to gain access to classified information. On July 16, 2019, he became a member of the National Anti-Corruption Council. During the first parliamentary session of the Verkhovna Rada after the parliamentary election , in which the Sluha Narodu party won an absolute majority, he was appointed chairman of the Ukrainian Domestic Intelligence Service (Sluschba bespeky Ukrajiny), succeeding Vasyl Hryzak .

Activities as head of the SBU

During his tenure at the head of the SBU , he performed a number of operations. In particular, one of the leaders of IS Al Bara Shishani , who was hiding in Ukraine, was arrested.

In addition, the SBU has seized the largest tobacco smuggling consignment in Ukraine's history for over 120 million UAH.

The security service began to deal increasingly with national security issues and counter-espionage activities, systematically carry out special operations in eastern Ukraine and counteract the activities of Russian hackers.

Ivan Bakanov himself stated that the SBU should become more effective - not only deal with the consequences, but also neutralize threats in the bud.

This is also the aim of the new “About SBU” bill, which was developed under the leadership of Bakanov. Adoption by the Verkhovna Rada is expected in spring 2020.
