Leonid Wassylowytsch Derkatsch (born July 19, 1939 in Dnipropetrovsk , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian politician, general and head of the secret service.

Life

Leonid Derkatsch completed his military service in the Soviet armed forces from 1961 to 1964 and then studied mechanical engineering at the physics-technical faculty of the University of Dnepropetrovsk until 1970 . He then worked as a senior engineer for the rocket manufacturer Juschmasch .

From 1972 he was employed by the KGB in the Dnepropetrovsk Oblast and in 1973 made further training for higher employment at the KGB. From 1983 to 1988 Derkatsch was deputy director of the mechanical factory in Pavlohrad and head of the KGB in Pavlohrad. In February 1988 he became the head of the human resources department and deputy chief of the KGB in Dnepropetrovsk Oblast.

From December 1992 he was the head of the State Service of Ukraine for Technical Information Protection . From August 1994 to July 1995 Leonid Derkatsch was first deputy chairman of the Ukrainian domestic intelligence service Sluschba bespeky Ukrajiny (SBU) Valery Malikov , then from July 11, 1995 to April 22, 1998, he headed the State Customs Service of Ukraine ( Ukrainian Державна мкитна с ) and finally became director of the Ukrainian Domestic Intelligence Service (SBU) on April 22, 1998. On February 10, 2001, in connection with the cassette scandal and the murder of the journalist Heorhij Gongadze , he was dismissed from this post by his long-time friend, then President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma . From May 14, 2002 to May 25, 2006 he was a member of the Verkhovna Rada , the Ukrainian parliament. Since August 23, 2000 he has had the military rank of Army General of Ukraine.

Together with his son Andrij Derkatsch, born in 1967, Leonid Derkach heads the Derkach group , a sub -group of the Dnipropetrovsk clan , a political and economic clientele policy network in the city of Dnipro.
