Ihor Petrowytsch Smeschko (born August 17, 1955 in Chrystyniwka , Cherkassy Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian politician ( strength and honor ) and former head of the secret service.

From September 5, 2003 to February 2005 he was head of the Ukrainian domestic intelligence service SBU . Before that, he was Deputy Head of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine since June 2003 .

Smeschko became known abroad in connection with the life-threatening dioxin poisoning of the former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko . After a joint dinner with Smeschko on September 5, 2004, Yushchenko had the first symptoms of poisoning , which shortly afterwards led to permanent disfigurement of his face and, according to public suspicions, aimed at preventing him from participating in the upcoming presidential elections .

During the Orange Revolution in November 2004, Smeschko actively campaigned to stop the Ukrainian Interior Ministry troops advancing against the demonstrators in the tent city on Maidan Nesaleschnosti . In view of this, the Ministry of the Interior ended the action. This probably prevented bloodshed.

After his election victory, the current president, Yushchenko, deposed Smeschko, and Oleksandr Turchynow became the new head of the SBU .

Smeschko took part in the presidential election in Ukraine 2019 in the first ballot on March 31, 2019 and achieved the sixth-best place with 6.04% of the vote.
