Walker Hancock

Walker Kirkland Hancock (born June 28, 1901 in St. Louis , Missouri , † December 30, 1998 in Gloucester , Massachusetts ) was an American sculptor .

He was known for his monumental sculptures , including Stone Mountain near Atlanta . In 1939, Hancock was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York .

At the end of the Second World War he worked for the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Section in Europe. The activity of this unit is portrayed in the film Monuments Men, shot in 2014 . John Goodman played the Hancock role of Sergeant Walter Garfield .

In May 1945, Walker Hancock set up the first so-called Central Collecting Point in Marburg , which, among other things, housed the art treasures originally stored in an ore mine in Siegen . He used the modern building of the State Archives as a basis . In the following months, the CCP's holdings were documented there by the photo archive Foto Marburg , which is also located in Marburg .

In 1989 Hancock received the National Medal of Arts and in 1990 the Presidential Medal of Freedom . Since 1941 he was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
