Catholic parish and pilgrimage church of the Assumption in Kaltenbrunn in Kaunertal

The pilgrimage church Kaltenbrunn stands in one layer on a steep eastern valley slope in the village of Kaltenbrunn in the municipality of Kaunertal in the Landeck district in the state of Tyrol . The Roman Catholic parish and pilgrimage church , consecrated on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary , belongs to the Prutz dean's office in the diocese of Innsbruck . The church is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

According to legend, the site was founded by the knight Erbo von Schenkenberg , who lived here as a penitent and hermit. The pilgrimage originated in the 14th century. In 1438 the church suffered a fire. Duke Siegmund considered building a Cistercian hospice and in 1483 founded a chaplain. At the end of the 15th century a late Gothic new building was started. The choir was consecrated in 1502, the nave was expanded in 1533 and consecrated in 1592. The massive Gothic tower was raised in baroque style from 1661 to 1668, as was the church in the 17th and first half of the 18th century. In 1891 the pilgrimage church was elevated to a parish church. From 1976 the church was renovated and restored.

architecture

The pilgrimage church is probably due to the western slope facing south, east of the mountain slope at the choir corner is the massive tower, the east long walls of the nave and choir to the slope are windowless, the entrance front is in the north, the access road is from the south, here is halfway to the church an east-facing chapel with a roof turret over the western front.

The nave under a steep gable roof has arched windows on the light side to the west of the valley and also arched skylight windows over a cornice. The retracted late Gothic choir is higher than the nave and shows three-tiered buttresses, pointed arched windows and base and coffin cornices. The gothic tower on the mountain side to the east of the choir has a high bell storey with ogival sound windows and above it an octagonal baroque structure from 1661/1668 with an onion helmet. On the valley side by the choir there is a sacristy under a pent roof. The nave has a Gothic side portal with a round bar profile and reinforcement from the beginning of the 16th century. The main portal is probably from the 17th century. The south-western sloping wall of the choir shows a baroque fresco Last Judgment towards the driveway .

The interior of the four-bay nave shows a barrel vault with stitch caps on pilasters with pieces of entablature. The pointed triumphal arch and the choir are situated with the longitudinal axis on the mountain side, the nave was probably later extended on the valley side. The two-bay choir with a five-eighth closure has grooved, late Gothic wall pillars with round services and baroque capitals. The vault of the choir is baroque like in the nave and shows Laub-Bandlwerk-Stuck around 1720/1730, the vault paintings in medallions around 1720/1730 were attributed to Franz Lukas and show scenes from the life of Mary and symbols of Mary and in the spandrels the original legend of the local pilgrimage .

Chapel of Mercy

In the longitudinal axis of the choir there is a chapel of grace, a building by the master builder Gallus Gratl (1714), shifted slightly from the center in the nave. The domed structure, which is oval in the longitudinal axis, on pillars with Pilate templates, has open round arches. Under the cornice are baroque medallions depicting the mysteries of the rosary . Two angels on the side of the entrance attributed to Balthasar Horer around 1760 were stolen in 1976. In the chapel, dressed as a miraculous image, there is a Gothic Madonna around 1400 in an altar by Andreas Huter (around 1870) with the statues Notburga and Isidor.

The high altar, by Andreas Huter (1887), bears the reliefs of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity and the side statues of Saints Joseph and Joachim as well as putti and angels on the entablature, all by Andreas Kölle (around 1720). The tabernacle and antependium with reliefs are from the 19th century.

In the choir there is a plague cross on the left, documented by Andreas Thamasch (1697), under the plague cross is the left neo-Gothic side altar by Andreas Huter (around 1885), the altar bears reliefs of angels with Arma Christi . The right side altar in the choir from the third quarter of the 17th century shows the altarpiece of the Last Judgment and the upper image of the Coronation of Mary and bears the side figures of Peter and Maria Magdalena attributed to Andreas Thamasch. The side altars in the nave are from the end of the 19th century by Andreas Huter, the left side altar bears a relief of the Heart of Mary and the figures of Antonius and Francis on the side, the right side altar bears the relief of the Good Shepherd and the figures of Simon and James on the side. Two chandelier angels (around 1760) attributed to Balthasar Horer were stolen in 1976.

The former high altar painting of the Assumption by Franz Lazier hangs on the right wall of the choir. Two statues, Christ at the hostage column, Christ Salvator , are from the 18th century. Andreas Huter created two statues, Peter and Paul, from the end of the 19th century. Lecture poles with the figures Barbara and Georg around 1715 were attributed to Andreas Kölle.
