The pilgrimage church of St. Maria am Bichele is a pilgrimage church in the municipality of St. Leonhard in Pitztal , Tyrol . The building is a listed building .

location

The church is located on the western slope of the valley above the Pitze between the towns of St. Leonhard and Piösmes on a slight elevation. It can be reached in about 15 minutes on foot from the parish church of St. Leonhard im Pitztal .

history

The starting point for the construction of the pilgrimage church in 1828 was the fear of pastor Josef Neururer, who was active as curate in St. Leonhard, that the parish church could become dilapidated due to the troubled subsoil and a replacement church would be necessary. In front of the pilgrimage church there was a chapel at the same location as early as the 17th century, which was built on the occasion of a pilgrimage legend from 1610. In this legend, an angel apparition is said to have appeared to a beggar named Michel who asked him to look for Our Lady at St. Leonhard. After a long search, the beggar is said to have found a small statue of Our Lady sitting on a tree stick. The chapel, which was later demolished when the pilgrimage church was built, was also built near the site. In the early 21st century, the church was restored after an avalanche.

architecture

The church is a simple building with a barrel vault in the long and high nave and a significantly smaller chancel with a choir closing on three sides . A small, open ridge turret was attached to the saddle roof . On the two pilgrimage routes leading up to the church there are wayside shrines with the 14 stations of the cross and the “five secrets of the Sorrowful Rosary ”. The reliefs of the wayside shrines were created by the local artist Matthias Neururer.

Furnishing

The four-column high altar was built in 1830 with late Baroque style elements. According to Georg Tinkhauser , the altar also contains the carved statue of Our Lady from the 17th century, which was the reason for the construction of the first chapel. The painting in the essay shows St. Josef , in the cafeteria there are figures of St. Notburga and Theresia .

The side altars house ornate shrines in which the relics of St. Victoria and Boniface are kept. They were acquired by the client Josef Neururer in Rome, and their authenticity was confirmed by a certificate dated March 26, 1830 signed by Cardinal Placido Zurla . On the consoles on the side walls there are late baroque statues, on the left wall the Maria Immaculata , on the right St. Johannes Nepomuk . Both were made around 1770, probably by members of the Imst artist family, Witwer . The representation of St. Nepomuk is remarkable in that the normal depiction as a priest was not used, but the motif of the pilgrim with a rosary on the belt and the Madonna on the shoulder collar. A copy of the old votive picture with the legend of its origin hangs on the back wall of the church.
