Location description

The church is in the hamlet of St. Leonhard, elevated above the road and surrounded by a cemetery.

history

The church is first mentioned in a document in 1485. In 1666 the consecration of a church was mentioned. Today's construction goes back to a reconstruction of the early Baroque predecessor church around 1762, which is particularly evident from the significantly expanded nave of the church. It was consecrated again on August 3, 1778, this time by Ignaz Graf Spaur, the administrator of the Brixen prince-bishop at the time. In 1891 the church was elevated to a parish church, and extensive renovation work was completed in 1991 to mark the 100th anniversary.

architecture

Exterior description

The church is a simple building with a polygonal recessed choir. The north tower has two-lane sound windows and is covered with a tent roof. The nave has three arched windows on both sides. Above the portal is a carved figure of St. Leonhard.

Inside description

The nave and the choir are barrel-vaulted with stitch caps . The vault rests on pilasters and is divided into three bays. A round arched triumphal arch divides the nave and choir. On the west side is a two-story gallery.

The late Baroque paintings in the interior, uncovered during the renovation work in 1990, show decorative and floral motifs and come from Philipp Jakob Greil (1729–1787) from Pfunds , to whom the painted stations of the cross, crosses of the Apostles and the painting on the brick pulpit are also attributed. In the 19th century the ceiling was decorated with pictures of the ceiling depicting St. Show Leonhard at the sermon and Jesus as a divine child friend, but these are no longer there today.

Furnishing

The altar furnishings come from the time the church was built in the third quarter of the 18th century. The wood carved figures come from the workshop of Jakob Wittwer and his son Josef Georg Wittwer . The altar leaves were painted by Philipp Jakob Greil. The high altar was made of very high quality. The high altar picture shows "Saint Leonhard in Glorie", as usual as a Benedictine abbot with a staff. It is flanked by figures of Saints Peter and James . On the left side altar there is a picture of “ Maria Immaculata ”. The upper picture shows St. Anne . The upper image is flanked by figures of St. Joachim and a second male saint. The picture on the right side altar was painted by Philipp Jakob Greil in 1767. It shows St. Francis Xavier during his missionary work in East India . The upper picture depicts Saint Joseph and is flanked by figures of Saints Ignatius and Aloisius , they come from the workshop of Andreas Kölle (1680–1755) in Fendels .

The stucco pulpit from the third quarter of the 18th century shows paintings by the four evangelists, they were exposed during renovation work in the 1960s. The picture fields show the four evangelists with their attributes in separate fields below. In the right field there are three child angels with the symbols of the three divine virtues faith (chalice), love (heart) and hope (anchor).

In the church, in the left wall of the nave, there is the tombstone of the builder of the church - Jakob Gargitter († 1773). The two classicist confessionals were around 1800 with top figures of the hll. Peter and Mary Magdalene added to refer to the sacrament of penance.
