location

The village is located about 1200 meters northeast of Ebershausen on the western edge of the Riedel between the valleys of the Krumbächles and Gutnach . Waltenberg is connected to the main town of the municipality, Ebershausen, via the federal highway 300 .

Place name

The name Waltenberg is interpreted as "Berg des Walto".

history

The area around Waltenberg was populated very early. Evidence of this settlement are on the one hand several prehistoric burial mound fields in the woods near the place, some of which are from the Hallstatt period . On the other hand, 500 m and 1500 m south of the village on the eastern edge of the Gutnachtal valley, there are two quadrangular jumps from the Celtic era, more precisely from the late Latène period.

Waltenberg was first mentioned in 1468. In 1497 Hiltgart Dietenhaimerin, Vögtin zu Ebershausen, sold the place to the Franciscan convent of Klosterbeuren . The monastery was the landlord and judge of the village until secularization in 1803. The high level of jurisdiction was exercised by the Roggenburg Monastery , the sovereignty lay with the Margraviate of Burgau . Through the secularization, the place came to Bavaria .

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent municipality of Seifertshofen , to which Waltenberg belonged, merged with the municipality of Ebershausen.

Attractions

The St. Wendelin Chapel from the second half of the 18th century was originally furnished in the Baroque style. Of these furnishings, only the altar and the altar crucifix remain. Today's paintings on the ceiling and walls are neo-baroque. Two figures in the chapel date from the late Gothic era.

Others

To the southwest of the Waltenberg chapel in the area of house no. 3 there is a medieval castle stable. Remnants of the ditch and a deeper brick well are still preserved today. Until 1933, the remains of the wall and the remains of a tower were also preserved. The trench enclosed an area of 43 by 26 m.
