Walter Biemel
Walter Biemel (born February 19, 1918 in Kronstadt , now Romania , or Topčider ; † March 6, 2015 in Aachen ) was a Romanian-German philosopher .
life and work
Born as the son of the director of the Kronstadt Philharmonic in Transylvania , he studied philosophy, psychology, sociology and art history in Bucharest from 1937 to 1941 , with Mircea Eliade among others . In 1942 Biemel went to Freiburg with the draft of an unrealized dissertation on the concept of nature at Novalis . Instead, he became a student of Martin Heidegger and developed his own main focus areas in phenomenology and the philosophy of art .
After the University of Freiburg closed in autumn 1944, Biemel went to the Husserl archive in Löwen . Here he worked on his treatise on Heidegger's conception of the world, written in French, with which he obtained his doctorate in Cologne in 1950 . He was the editor of several volumes of the Husserliana and the Heidegger edition . As an employee at the Husserl Archive in Cologne his habilitation thesis was on the significance of Kant's philosophy of art, he with the University of Cologne habilitated . From 1962 until his retirement he taught as a full professor of philosophy at the Philosophical Institute of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen and from 1978 as a professor of art philosophy at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf .
Walter Biemel's life and thinking were shaped by his lifelong, intensive engagement with modern art and literature; this is where his art-philosophical approach is based. Since the establishment of the Museum Insel Hombroich , he has been closely connected to the Hombroich cultural area as an advisory board member for the Philosophy section, both with the establishment of the series of colloquiums Hombroich: Philosophy and with his commitment to the Hombroich Raumortlabor project .
Walter Biemel donated his entire archival and library legacy to the Insel Hombroich Foundation .
His older brother Rainer Biemel became known in France as a Rilke translator and writer under the pseudonym Jean Rounault .
