Walter Blachfellner (born May 18, 1952 in Werfen , State of Salzburg , Austria ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ).

biography

After attending school at the Humanist Gymnasium Borromäum in Salzburg and the Musisches Gymnasium in Sankt Johann im Pongau , he became an employee of the postal and telegraph administration in 1969 .

After he became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) in 1971 , he began his political career in 1982 as chairman of the postal union in the Salzburg area (FSG Flachgau). In 1986 he was first deputy chairman and then in 1989 chairman of the postal union of the state of Salzburg . In 1996 he was elected chairman of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB) in the state of Salzburg. He was responsible for the 80,000 union members of the state and more than 200,000 employees.

In April 2001, he succeeded Gabi Burgstaller , who became Deputy Governor of the State Governor, as State Councilor and thus a member of the government of the State of Salzburg.

Governor Burgstaller appointed him to her first regional government on April 28, 2004, as a regional councilor for housing subsidies, building and road construction, urban water management, consumers and consumer protection, the environment and water, water law and water protection and trade. Since April 22, 2009 he has been the regional councilor for housing subsidies, regional planning, environmental protection, environmental medicine, consumer protection, commercial and industrial facilities in the second regional government of Burgstaller .

In June 2013 Blachfellner announced his retirement from politics after the SPÖ had suffered major losses in the state elections in Salzburg in 2013 . He declared that he would renounce his mandate in the Landtag and retire.

At the beginning of July 2013, his successor as Salzburg State Councilor for Housing, Hans Mayr , announced that Walter Blachfellner had allocated the entire funding volume for the year for the construction of rental apartments two days before he left the Salzburg State Government - in mid-June. His successor in office was thus presented with a fait accompli. This approach was "anything but usual," it said from the relevant department. Furthermore, Hans Mayr expressed the suspicion that "in the worst case, several hundred million euros in housing money could have been speculated in the Salzburg financial scandal", that speculation had been made with funds from the Salzburg housing fund, his predecessor Blachfellner had repeatedly denied.

In November 2016 he was elected regional chairman of the Salzburg Pensioners' Association, and in November 2019 he resigned from this position.
