Walter Caspari (theologian)

August Anton Nathanael Walter Caspari (born June 19, 1847 in Sommerhausen , † February 2, 1923 in Erlangen ) was a German Lutheran theologian and clergyman .

Life

Caspari was the son of pastor Karl Heinrich Caspari . After attending grammar schools in Munich and Augsburg , he studied Protestant theology, initially at the University of Munich from 1864 , before moving to the University of Erlangen in 1865 . In 1867 and 1868 he continued his studies at the University of Leipzig before he passed the theological exam in Erlangen in 1868. During his studies in Erlangen, he became a member of the Bubenreuther fraternity in 1868 . He then completed the seminary in Munich and was finally ordained on June 13, 1869 .

Caspari then worked in pastoral care and as a teacher. From 1870 to 1873 he was city vicar and religion teacher in Würzburg , from 1873 to 1883 pastor of the St. Martins parish in Memmingen and finally from 1883 to 1885 pastor of the St. Johannis parish in Ansbach .

Caspari received on November 1, 1885 the position as university preacher at the University of Erlangen and as associate professor for practical theology. In 1887 he was appointed full professor for practical theology . He was dean of the theological faculty and in the academic year 1898/1899 rector of the university. On April 1, 1919, he retired .

The theologian Wilhelm Caspari was his son.
