Walter Elbert Barton (also Walter E. Barton , born November 7, 1886 in Wadesville , Posey County , Indiana , USA ; † October 21, 1983 in Washington DC , USA) was an American lawyer .

Life

Family and education

Walter Elbert Barton, who was born in the Unincorporated Area Wadesville in the US state of Indiana and was the elder of two children of Anson Barton (1861-1914) and Sophia Ann Blackburn Barton (1865-1952), studied at the from 1903 to 1905 Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute . In 1908 to 1909, he devoted himself to the study of law at the University of Colorado , in 1914 graduated , he cum laude for Bachelor of Laws at the George Washington University .

Walter Elbert Barton married Martha R. Browning, who died in 1953, on December 6, 1917. The connection has three daughters. On April 1, 1955, he married Isabelle Stockett Nixon for the second time. Walter Elbert Barton died in October 1983 just before the age of 97. Barton found his final resting place next to his first wife in Arlington National Cemetery .

Professional background

Walter Elbert Barton was admitted to the bar in the US state of Indiana in 1915. As a result, he ran a law firm in Evansville, which he resigned in 1917. Since August 1917, Barton , who joined the United States Army , received training in the 2d Officers Training Camp at Fort Benjamin Harrison, which he completed in November of the same year. Barton was then assigned to the 89th Division, since March 1918 he served in the 164th Depot Brigade, since August 1918 with the American Expeditionary Forces . Barton, who took part in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive , was honorably discharged in July 1919 with the rank of First Lieutenant .

Walter Elbert Barton moved to Washington DC the following year, where he opened a law firm. Barton specialized in federal taxes. He served as author of the Digest of United States Tax Laws for the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory from 1924 to 1936 and as Revision Editor of Volume 7 on Corporations, Mertens Law of Federal Income Taxation. Walter Elbert Barton published numerous articles on taxes in specialist journals. He was a staunch Republican supporter .

Walter Elbert Barton was a member of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America , the Freemasons , the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, and the University Club of Washington, DC.
