Walter Furtwängler
Walter Eugen Georg Furtwängler (also Walther ; born November 23, 1887 in Berlin ; † May 15, 1967 in Bad Wiessee ) was a German mountaineer .

Walter Furtwängler was a member of the Furtwängler family . He was the son of the classical archaeologist Adolf Furtwängler , brother of the conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler and father of the film director Florian Furtwängler and the architect Bernhard Furtwängler. His daughter is the actress Maria Furtwängler .
Life
Walter Furtwängler attended elementary school and the first four classes of the humanistic grammar school in Munich , after which he received private lessons. In 1907 he passed the final exam at the secondary school in Heidelberg . In 1907/08 he served as a one-year volunteer with the 1st Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment in Munich and also studied philosophy at the University of Munich . He then went to Berlin, where he prepared for the planting profession in the colonies at the Oriental Seminar. From 1909 to 1911 he lived in German East Africa and took a. a. participated in the Tendaguru expedition. Sick of malaria, he returned to Germany in 1911 and began studying art history in Erlangen . In the spring of 1912 he returned to Africa and took over the management of the Siegfried König hunting and sports expedition. He managed the first ascent with snowshoes of the Kaiser-Wilhelm Spitze (today Kibo ), the highest peak of the Kilimanjaro massif; The “ Furtwängler Glacier ” was named after Walter Furtwängler because in December 1912 he was the first to ski from the Kibo together with Siegfried König. In May 1913 he returned to Germany and went on an agricultural study trip to Russia in 1913/14. In the summer semester of 1914 he studied art history in Munich. From autumn 1914 until the end of 1918 he took part in the First World War as a non-commissioned officer. From 1919 to 1929 he studied art history in Freiburg ; Since he could not get a doctorate there with a certificate from a secondary school, he submitted his dissertation on the old cemetery in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1923 in Erlangen.
He and his wife Hilde ran a guesthouse in the "Haus Tanneck" in Bad Wiessee.
