Walter Gugerbauer

Walter Gugerbauer (* 1955 in Linz ) is an Austrian conductor .

Life

After graduating from the Stiftsgymnasium Wilhering , he studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in Vienna . From 1979 to 1982 he was Kapellmeister of the Vienna Boys' Choir and conducted around 250 concerts by this choir in Europe and Asia. From 1982 to 1987 he was Kapellmeister and Choir Director at the Städtische Bühnen Heidelberg . From 1987 to 1990 years followed as Kapellmeister at the Lower Saxony State Theater in Hanover . At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein ( Düsseldorf - Duisburg ) he was first conductor from 1990 to 1996 and was responsible for the entire repertoire of this house. From 1995 to 1998 he was general music director of the stages of the state capital Kiel . From 1998 to 2000 he worked as a freelancer, including being the first permanent guest conductor of the Lower Saxony State Opera in Hanover .

Walter Gugerbauer gives guest performances at many important opera houses, including a. in Leipzig , Oslo , Berlin and Vienna. He conducts orchestras such as the Bruckner Orchestra Linz , the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig , the Orchester Philharmonique in Paris and the radio orchestras in Munich , Hanover , Kaiserslautern and Cologne . He has also directed radio productions and concerts with artists such as Grace Bumbry , Agnes Baltsa , Matti Salminen , René Kollo , Vadim Repin and Grigory Sokolov .

At the beginning of the 2000/2001 season he was appointed General Music Director of the Erfurt Theater . By cultivating the traditional classical and romantic repertoire in particular, he was able to increase the quality of the orchestra. On December 21, 2010 he announced that he would not renew his contract in Erfurt. From June 2017 he will be music director at Theater Hof .
