Johann Walter Hofer (born February 25, 1955 in Seeboden ), actually Johann Hofer, is an Austrian sports official. Since 1992 he has been the FIS race director for ski jumping .

biography

Walter Hofer grew up in the Carinthian municipality of Seeboden, where he was active as a football player. At SV Spittal / Drau he worked as a masseur and assistant trainer, while his main job was in the administration of the Austrian Federal Railways . Hofer finally began studying sports science at the University of Salzburg and was appointed fitness trainer for the Austrian Ski Association in 1982 .

In 1988 Walter Hofer switched to the German Ski Association as a trainer . As assistant to national trainer Rudi Tusch , he looked after the German national ski jumping team.

In 1992 Hofer was commissioned by the International Ski Federation FIS as race director to organize the ski jumping competitions. Since then, Hofer has been present at all major ski jumping competitions and led the sport to its greatest popularity to date in the 1990s. In 2008 Hofer was also appointed Race Director of Nordic Combined, his official title was Head of Ski Jumping & Nordic Combined . In 2012 he was followed by Lasse Ottesen as the Nordic Combined Race Director.

On November 15, 2018 it was announced that Hofer will end his career as an official after the 2020 Ski Flying World Championships in Planica. The Italian Sandro Pertile is to be his successor .

Others

As part of the Ski Jumping World Cup in Klingenthal in mid-December 2019, Hofer was made an honorary member of the VSC Klingenthal.

Walter Hofer is married and has two daughters.
