Peter Oswald

Peter Oswald (born October 9, 1953 in Hohenems ; † August 3, 2017 ) was an Austrian cultural and music manager and theorist with a focus on new music .

biography

After studying pharmacy (graduated in 1979) as well as musicology , theater studies and philosophy (graduated in 1982 from the University of Vienna with a dissertation on the late work of Gustav Mahler ), he began his freelance journalistic and musicological work, including for Falter , Neue Zeitschrift für Music , Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Melos and the ORF . From 1984 to 1987 he was head of the promotion department of the Universal Edition. The focus of his work was Franz Schreker , Alexander Zemlinsky , Hans Zender , Wolfgang Rihm and Beat Furrer . He then worked as a music consultant for the Wiener Festwochen and radio journalist for ORF until 1988 .

From 1988 to 1991 Peter Oswald was head of the music department in the Styrian regional studio of the ORF (artistic director of music protocol and editing of new music for ORF). In 1991/1992 he was music director for ORF television. He was responsible for documentaries such as “ Pierre Boulez in Salzburg”, “ Peter Sellar's Approach to Messiaen's Saint François d'Assise ”, “American Dreams” and about new music .

In August 1992 he took over the management of the Klangforum Wien . In 1999 he founded the label "Kairos Musikproduktion" together with his wife Barbara Fränz. From 2000 to 2005 he was director of the Styrian Autumn .

In 2003 he was artistic director of the concerts as part of Graz Capital of Culture 2003 - Icons of the 20th Century. Since 2006 he has taught at the Universities of Vienna , Krems and Zurich . From 2009 he worked at the Teatro Real in Madrid . In 2010 he was director of the Arcana Festival for New Music. In 2012/13 he took over the management of the Arcana Festival, with a focus on new music, flamenco, natural science (complex systems) and visual arts. From 2014 he participated in European cooperation in the field of composition and visual arts.
