Life

Jertz spent his childhood and youth in Oppenheim am Rhein . In 1965 he completed his education at the local modern language grammar school with the Abitur.

In 1965 Jertz joined the Air Force as an officer and pilot candidate. After completing officer and pilot training in Germany and the United States of America , he was transferred to Fighter Bomber Wing 31 "Boelcke" in Nörvenich , where he flew the F 104 G "Starfighter" weapon system as a fighter-bomber pilot.

From 1976 to 1978 he trained as a general staff officer at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg . This was followed by uses in alternation between military and general staff service in the Bundeswehr and in the integrated ( NATO ) area. In 1983 he was retrained in the Tornado weapon system . From 1988 to 1991 he commanded the 32nd fighter-bomber squadron in Lechfeld in the rank of colonel as commodore . In April 1994 he became  Chief of the Air Force Command South in Meßstetten , while at the same time being promoted to Brigadier General .

In June 1995, Jertz was given direct command of all German air forces deployed in the former Yugoslavia for peacekeeping. This was the first deployment of German soldiers on the basis of a Bundestag resolution since the Federal Republic of Germany came into existence . After six months he returned to Germany.

From April 1996 to September 2000 Jertz led the 1st Air Force Division based in Karlsruhe . During this period - from the end of April 1999 to mid-June 1999 - he worked as NATO's military press spokesman during Operation Allied Force in the war in Kosovo.

From October 2000 to September 2001, Jertz, who had since been promoted to Lieutenant General , commanded three military headquarters in personal union: the National Air Force Command North, the NATO command post Combined Air Operations Center 2 and the Reaction Force Air Staff in Kalkar, Niederrhein .

From October 2002 Jertz was the commander of the air force command in Cologne-Wahn and thus the superior of all members of the air force operations units. It was responsible for around 32,000 soldiers, around 8,000 civilian employees, as well as 460 combat aircraft and around 180 transport aircraft of the Luftwaffe, which could be used for deployment and humanitarian aid.

In May 2006 Jertz retired.

For Marcus Held , who resigned from the mayor's office of Oppenheim on suspicion of infidelity and dubious business , a non-partisan alliance proposed Jertz, who was not partisan, for election as mayor on June 3, 2018. Jertz was elected the new mayor of Oppenheim on June 3, 2018 with 84.6% of the vote. There was no opposing candidate, the turnout was 40.8%. Jertz was sworn in as Mayor of Oppenheim on the evening of June 21, 2018. In the local elections in 2019 Jertz was 88.4 percent of the vote against the candidate of the group of voters Bürgerliste Oppenheim re-elected Helmut Krethe.
