Walter Nicolai (classical philologist)

Walter Nicolai (born March 25, 1933 in Frankfurt an der Oder ; † October 19, 2018 in Mainz ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Rottweil , Nicolai initially devoted himself to studies at the Leibniz College at the University of Tübingen from 1952 to 1953 . He then studied Classical Philology, German Philology and Philosophy at the Universities of Tübingen, Munich , Münster , Hamburg and Mainz . He passed the first state examination in Greek and German in 1958 in Münster. He achieved his doctorate in Mainz in 1963 with Walter Marg with the dissertation Hesiods Erga. Observations on the structure . He then worked as a research assistant at the Mainz Seminar for Classical Philology and completed his habilitation in 1971 with the font Small and Large Representation Units in the Iliad . In 1973 he was appointed Scientific Councilor and Professor, and in 1998 he retired. In the first five years of his retirement he gave German lessons for immigrant children at the Goethe secondary school in Mainz, and since 2003 he has given reading courses for foreign students at the German Institute of the University of Mainz.

Greek literature was at the center of Nicolai's research. He wrote monographs on Homer , Hesiod, Herodotus and the three Attic tragedians Aeschylus , Sophocles and Euripides . There were also numerous essays and contributions to anthologies in which he also pursued socio-political and historical approaches.
