Walter Rolland

Walter Rolland (born December 21, 1928 in Lemberg ; † January 9, 2016 in Bonn ) was a German legal scholar , ministerial official and university professor .

Life

Born in 1928 in Lemberg, Poland, at the time , Rolland was called up for military service towards the end of the Second World War . He was then taken prisoner of war. From 1946 to 1948 he worked as an interpreter for American agencies in Germany. He made up his Abitur and studied law from 1949 to 1953 at the Philipps University of Marburg . After passing the first state examination in law at the Frankfurt am Main Higher Regional Court , he began his legal clerkship in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1954 , which he completed in 1958 with the second state examination in law. During his legal clerkship in 1957, also in Marburg, he worked with the work The Development of German Marriage Law since 1920 with special consideration of the statements of the Christian churches. to the Dr. iur. PhD.

From 1958 to 1960, Rolland initially worked as a judge in North Rhine-Westphalia, then he went to the Federal Ministry of Justice , where from April 1976 he was head of the central administration department and finally head of the department of civil law , international private law and international procedural law including arbitration .

After the reunification of Germany , Rolland was involved in the re-establishment of the law faculty at the University of Halle from 1990 . In teaching he was initially active as a visiting professor from 1992 and then took over the endowed professorship "Civil Law of German Unity" from 1996 until his retirement in 2000 ; He continued to work as an examiner in the State Justice Examination Office of Saxony-Anhalt until the end of 2008. In April 2005, Rolland was awarded the Paris X-Nanterre University Medal of Honor .

Focus of work

The focus of work, both practical and academic, was on civil law at Rolland . Rolland headed the commissions for the reform of marriage law in 1977 , the reform of arbitration in 1998 and the reform of the law of obligations in 2002 . Rolland also made comments in the relevant areas. Around 1990 he worked as a department head in the Federal Ministry of Justice, working out the regulations relating to civil law for the Unification Treaty and therefore familiarized himself with the civil law of the GDR. As a professor in Halle, he kept the main focus of his work, in particular that of his work as a department head in the Federal Ministry of Justice.
