Walter Schmid (classical philologist, 1910)

Walter Schmid (born August 28, 1910 in Reutlingen , † September 13, 1997 ibid) was a German classical philologist . He is not to be confused with the Swiss classical philologist of the same name.

Life

After attending school in the Protestant theological seminars of Kloster Schöntal and Stift Urach , Schmid studied classical philology , archeology and German at the universities of Tübingen (among others with Otto Weinreich ) and Munich . He received his doctorate in 1943 with a dissertation on Thucydides . After the end of the war, he worked in Reutlingen from 1945 as a teacher and from 1959 as deputy headmaster at the Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium , from 1967 as director of the newly founded Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium in the process of being established. During his professional career and after his retirement, Schmid published numerous academic monographs, essays and reviews on Greek-Latin literature and gave lectures, including at the Baden-Württemberg regional association of the German Classical Philology Association . A focus of his scientific occupation was the prose rhythm theory of Aristotle and Cicero . Schmid has also written books on Catullus , Virgil and the appendix Vergiliana as well as Sallust .
