Walter Schroth

Walter Schroth (born June 3, 1882 in Glumbowitz , † October 6, 1944 near Bad Nauheim ) was a German officer , most recently general of the infantry in World War II .

Life

After joining the Prussian Army on February 27, 1902, he was appointed Fahnenjunker , promoted to lieutenant on August 18, 1903 and transferred to the Infantry Regiment "Graf Kirchbach" (1st Lower Silesian) No. 46 . He fought in World War I and was awarded for his achievements with both classes of the Iron Cross , the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords, the Hohenzollern Cross of Honor III. Class with swords, the Bavarian Military Merit Order IV. Class with swords, the Officer's Cross of the Albrechts Order with swords, the Knight's Cross of the Frederick Order with Swords and the Hanseatic Cross of the City of Hamburg.

After his promotion to lieutenant colonel on February 1, 1929 and to colonel on October 1, 1930, he became commander of the infantry school of the Reichswehr in Dresden on October 1, 1933 . In this position he became major general on August 1, 1934 . On October 1, 1935, Schroth took over the 1st Infantry Division of the expanding Wehrmacht in Königsberg . His divisional staff was transferred to Insterburg on February 3, 1936 . He was on April 1, 1936 Lieutenant General and on March 1, 1938 Commanding General of the XII. Army Corps . He was promoted to General of the Infantry on February 1, 1938. Schroth also took part in the occupation of Czechoslovakia on October 1, 1938.

He lived through World War II until February 19, 1942 as the commanding general of his army corps. He received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on July 9, 1941 for his service in the battles for the Brest-Litovsk fortress . On April 30, 1942 he became commander in military district IV in Dresden as the successor to General of the Infantry Erich Wöllwarth , but was replaced on March 1, 1943 by General of the Infantry Viktor von Schwedler . On May 1, 1943 he was then commander in military district XII (Wiesbaden) . Schroth was killed in a traffic accident on October 6, 1944 near Bad Nauheim. After his death, Lieutenant General Paul Danhauser followed him in this role.

Walter Schroth was also a member of the Wehrmacht's court of honor .
