Walter Siebelist

Walter Siebelist (born March 30, 1904 in Hamburg ; † June 7, 1978 there ) was a German painter , graphic artist and architectural sculptor .

Life

Walter Siebelist was a son of the painter Arthur Siebelist . From 1921 to 1924 he received lessons from Leopold von Kalckreuth . Then he attended the State Art School in Hamburg with Julius Wohlers until 1927 . In the early 1930s he traveled to Italy and Spain. Here he got to know the works of Antoni Gaudí , whom he took as a model. During the Second World War , Siebelist did military service in the east from 1939 to 1945. In 1943 he married Hedwig Koopmann, who died in 2009. The couple had two children. During Operation Gomorrah , he lost most of the works created up to that point.

In 1946 Siebelist of two years of Soviet captivity back to his hometown, where he 1947 the Baukreis joined. From 1946 to 1952 he was a member of the Hamburg Secession . From 1961 he taught art at the Hamburger Volkshochschule.

Walter Siebelist died in June 1978. In the same year a memorial exhibition was held at the Free Academy of the Arts . A small catalog containing texts by Gustav Burmester and Max Hermann Mahlmann was published for the occasion . It also contained parts of a diary that Siebelist had kept in Russia in 1943.

Works

Walter Siebelist initially worked figuratively, but continuously developed into an abstract artist. He used various materials such as glass, ceramics and metal in his building sculptures. From 1949 he created over 60 commissioned works. The majority of this can be found in Hamburg. These works include mosaics at the Kieler Straße employment office from 1954 and at the Steinstraße underground station , made in 1960. At the Burgstraße underground station there is a precious sculpture made in 1966, and in Planten un Blomen a mosaic fountain from 1953.

The works outside Hamburg include a war memorial from 1963 in Burg and another such memorial in Barmstedt . In 1960 he decorated the wall of a power station in Stade , and in 1969 he designed a glass relief for the power station in Wiesmoor . There is a metal relief from 1968 in Bangkok .

Walter Siebelist's paintings can be found in the Hamburger Kunsthalle and in the collection of the Hamburg Cultural Authority .
