Walter Taibo , full name Walter Taibo Martínez , (born March 7, 1931 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player and coach.

Player career

society

Taibo, son of the Spanish immigrants José Taibo and Brígida Martínez who came to Uruguay in 1919, was born the third of four brothers named Raúl, Juan Carlos, Walter and Nelson. After attending school, he first worked in his father's bakery in Cerrito de la Victoria . He first played for El Convenio in his youth before joining Bella Vista at the age of 14 . Taibo's time with the Montevideans lasted from 1945 to 1949. During his time with Bella Vista, the future goalkeeper also completed nine competitive games as a midfielder. In 1949 he moved to the big city rival and football giant Nacional . There he played in the Tercera in the year of his move . After goalkeeper Taibo injured his lungs in a game against Danubio in Parque Central in 1950 and suddenly spat blood on his first trip abroad to Porto Alegre, he had to sit out for around three years and returned in 1953 for the last three games against River Plate Montevideo , Peñarol and the Rampla Juniors return to the football field. Taibo then won the Uruguayan championship in 1955, 1956 and 1957 with the ensemble trained by Ondino Viera . In 1958, his team also won the Copa Teresa Herrera . In 1959 he took part in a European tour with Nacional, losing only two of ten games against Barcelona and Dynamo Moscow . He played against Barcelona despite a knee injury and delivered an extraordinarily poor performance, which dashed his hopes for a contract with the previously interested Catalans. During his time with the Bolsos , he was team captain for five years. In 1959 and 1960 he was in the ranks of the Argentine club Club Atlético Huracán and played 41 games there. In 1961, according to another source in 1962, he joined the Montevideo Wanderers and stayed there until his move in 1966. At the beginning of his time there, he broke his finger and had to take another five-month break. During his club membership, he was with the Wanderers second division champion. There are also sources that relate him to the Bolsos in that period , but these contradict Taibo's own statements. Taibo was part of the Peñarols squad in the Primera División in 1966 and 1967 . This was unusual in that he had previously acted as captain of arch-rival Nacional for years. With the Aurinegros coached by Roque Máspoli , he won the Copa Libertadores and the World Cup in 1966 . The following year they triumphed in the Uruguayan championship. He then played first for Sud América . 1969 followed an engagement with the club Mar de Fondo , with which he became master of the C and rose to the B. In the following year he also briefly played for Progreso . He then ended his career in Carmelo with Nacional, where he was active until 1975.

National team

Taibo was also a member of the senior national team of Uruguay , for which he completed 30 international matches between March 23, 1955 and June 26, 1966. He had to accept 46 goals. Taibo, who made his debut under national coach Juan Carlos Corazzo , participated with Uruguay in the South American Championships in Peru in 1957 and in Argentina in 1959 , as well as in the 1966 World Cup, in which Ladislao Mazurkiewicz was the goalkeeper. Although he was not used in the tournament in England, he had played in the World Cup qualification as part of the starting lineup in the matches against Bolivia and Peru.

Coaching

During and after his active career, he coached the clubs Bella Vista, Montevideo Wanderers, Sud América, River Plate, Cerro and Colón. As early as 1962, he gave a nearly two-month guest appearance in this role at Bella Vista . He also took on this role at Wanderers in 1965. In 1968 he did the same at Sud América as the successor to Milans who switched to Danubio . In 1975 he took over the team River Plate Montevideos . A year later, the Club Atlético Cerro resorted to Taibo's services. In 1981 he was in charge of the Danubio FC team .
