Walter Vogelsang

Walter Vogelsang (born November 14, 1923 ) is a German football goalkeeper who played for Vorwärts Leipzig , the BSG Einheit Ost Leipzig and the SC Rotation Leipzig in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

For the 1951/52 season, under the name "Sportvereinigung Vorwärts Volkspolizei Leipzig", a team was incorporated into the GDR Oberliga, which had previously only played games as part of the internal training of the Ministry of the Interior of the GDR's head office. The 28-year-old goalkeeper Walter Vogelsang was part of their squad. This season, the league played 36 games, of which Vogelsang played 20 games. With 15th place, the People's Police narrowly escaped relegation and entered the league season 1952/53 as the "Sports Club Forward of the Barracked People's Police Leipzig". Horst Jaschke , who was seven years younger than him, was added to the team as the new regular goalkeeper , and Vogelsang only played in four league games at the beginning of the first half of the season as a substitute for the injured Jaschke. This season, the sports club failed to stay up.

Vogelsang then moved to the upper league promoted unit East Leipzig. There he was 2nd goalkeeper behind Heinz Franke , whom he only represented in the second half of the season in five league games in the 1953/54 season. 1954/55 Vogelsang was behind Wolfgang Pröhl in the team. This was taken over in November 1954 by the newly founded Rotation Leipzig sports club. Vogelsang only played five games in the major league for the sports club, only three of them from the start. He completed his last league game for the SC Rotation as part of the transition round in GDR football in autumn 1955 to switch from summer-spring game rhythm to the calendar year system. On the fourth game day he was substituted on in the 58th minute for the goalkeeper Pröhl.

It was also Vogelsang's last appearance in higher-class football, in which he played 35 games in the GDR major league.
