The villa is on Roxburgh Street on the left bank of the Tweed on the western edge of Kelso. Walton Hall, built in 1820, was built by publisher and writer John Ballantyne . Ballantyne was a friend and publisher of Walter Scott . He had the villa built to go fishing there.

The one-story building has a square floor plan. Its masonry consists of quarry stone with natural stone details . The facades are plastered with Harl . The recessed entrance area is located in the middle on the northeast-facing front. It is designed with Ionic columns. Gables crown the flanking windows. At the back a semi- octagonal recess emerges in the middle . The building closes with a slate-covered platform roof .

The associated stables are connected to the villa by a flat wall with a cast iron fence. The one-story building was originally four axes wide, but one axis was added on the north side. The wagon shed closes with a slate hipped roof . A fish-shaped weather vane rises up from the roof turret with its octagonal floor plan .

A high quarry stone wall separates the property on the north side from the street. The two-winged gateway on the right is designed in the style of a triumphal arch with Ionic pilasters . The pedestrian portal, set in approximately in the middle, closes with a round arch and architrave .
