Night Songs is the debut album by the US blues rock band Cinderella , released in 1986 .

background

Cinderella had recorded two demos in 1984 and 1985 and thus caught the attention of Jon Bon Jovi , who got them a recording deal with the help of Derek Shulman ( A&R manager at Mercury Records ) . According to the producer , Andy Johns , Jim Drnc, Cinderella's drummer, was not good enough that he was replaced for the recording by Jody Cortez, who recorded the album with the band. Before the album was released, Drnc was replaced by Fred Coury , who had been Keel's drummer until then . Singer and guitarist Tom Keifer wrote all the songs on the record.

The recordings for the album took place in Bearsville Studios (Bearsville), Kajem Studios (Gladwyn), Warehouse Studios, Sigma Studios (both Philadelphia ), and The Sound Factory ( Los Angeles ), the sound mixing took place in the Record Plant Studio in New York . It was also performed by Andy Johns.

As a guest musician appeared next to Jon Bon Jovi, who the backing vocals to the titles nothin 'for nothin' and In From the Outside contributed, Bill Mattson ( Shake Me ), Barry Bennedetta (lead guitar at nothin 'for nothin' , Push Push and Back Home Again ) as well as Jeff Paris (all keyboards) and Tony Mills (backing vocals).

As singles , at least in the USA, the tracks Nobody's Fool , Shake Me (both 1986) and Somebody Save Me (1987) were released.

reception

Night Songs reached number 3 in the US album charts , the singles Nobody's Fool (both 1986) and Somebody Save Me (1987) made it to number 12 and 66, respectively, of the US singles charts . The band received a gold record on October 1, 1986 for their debut album, which also went platinum on December 9, 1986. By May 28, 1991 Night Songs also received double and triple platinum awards.

Reinhard Harms wrote in a contemporary review for Metal Hammer that if he didn't know, any expert on the title song would say that he was listening to AC / DC - the vocals resemble "Brian Johnson's down to the smallest phrasing and the most precise frequency" that the “mix-up is inevitable”. The “melody and arrangement” of other titles made it “seem credible” that the band was “not aiming at mere copying”. The production was successful and had a good, crystal-clear sound, but still enough aggressiveness.
