Naming
Originally the river was called Khek (Thai: เข็ ก ), after an epithet of the Hakka . It got its current name after the Amphoe Wang Thong , through which it mainly flows. Wang (Thai: วัง ) means "palace", Thong (Thai: ทอง ) means "gold", thus "river of the golden palace".
