geography

The Khek River in Wang Thong

Amphoe Wang Thong is located in the southeast of Phitsanulok Province within the basin of the Mae Nam Nan (Nan River) , which flows into the Mae Nam Chao Phraya . Important water sources are the Khwae Wang Thong (Thai: แคว วังทอง - Wang Thong tributary ), which is also called the Khek River, as well as the Mae Nam Khwae Noi and the Maenam Tha Muen Ram .

On the border with the Amphoe Mueang Phitsanulok lies the former Bueng Ratchanok wetland, which is now a local recreational area. There are lakes and ponds on the park-like grounds, and hiking trails invite you to take a walk.

history

Amphoe Wang Thong was founded in 1895 as Amphoe Nakhon Pa Mak, which was named after the centrally located tambon . The head office was in Ban Sam Ruen. Since the area there is not very conveniently located and is also frequently hit by floods , the administration moved to the east of the river Khwae Wang Thong , where the local market is today.

In 1928 the Tambon Phai Lom, Noen Kum and Nakhon Pa Mak were relocated to a new Amphoe Bang Krathum . At the same time, the Tambon Kaeng Sopha and Ban Klang from Nakhon Thai were added.

When the east bank of the Wang Thong was later cleaned, the main administration building moved to its current location. The amphoe was renamed Pa Mak in 1931 and was finally named Wang Thong in 1939.
