Washtucna is a small town with Town status in Adams County in Washington State, USA . As of the 2010 United States Census , Washtucna had 208 residents, a 20 percent loss from the previous census. The city was named after the Franklin County lake, 12 mi (19 km) away , which itself was named after a Palouse chief .

history

George Bassett, a settler from Iowa , settled the future location in 1878 with his wife Alice Lancaster Bassett. Her goal was horse breeding , and until 1900 her ranch was the location for an annual gathering of wild horses . Adams County's first post office was established in 1882, with Bassett as postmaster. The post office was taken over by TC Martin in 1894, who then opened the first shop in Washtucna.

The first railroad line was completed by the Oregon Improvement Company in 1886 and carried 30,000 bushels (approximately 1,058,000 liters) of wheat for the first five years of its existence. Between 1892 and 1917 there were several attempts to establish large-scale irrigation projects , but all failed. Since then, wheat has been grown in dry fields.

Washtucna was officially recognized on October 27, 1903; the first mayor was Charles T. Booth.

geography

It is located at the intersection of Washington State Routes 26 and 261, approximately 65 mi (105 km) west of Pullman , 86 mi (138 km) southwest of Spokane, and 220 mi (354 km) east of Seattle . According to the United States Census Bureau , the city occupies a total of 1.79 square kilometers, which does not include water.

2010 Census

According to the 2010 census , Washtucna had 208 residents, 97 households and 62 families. The population density was 116.4 per km ². There were 126 housing units at an average density of 70.5 per km².

The population was 95.2% white , 1% African American , 1.4% Native American , 1.4% other "races", and 1% two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 2.4% of the population.

Of the 97 households, 18.6% had children under the age of 18, 47.7% were run by married couples living together , 11.3% by single mothers and 5.2% by single fathers; 36.1% were non-families. 30.9% of the households were singles and 9.3% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.63.

The median age in the city was 51.6 years. 17.3% of the population were under 18, 6.7% between 18 and 24, 13.4% between 25 and 44, 37.5% between 45 and 64 and 25, 65 years or older. 57.2% of the population were men and 42.8% women.

Census 2000

As of the 2000 census , Washtucna had 260 residents, 110 households and 72 families. The population density was 185.9 per km ². There were 133 housing units at an average density of 95.1 per km².

The population was 96.15% white , 1.92% Indian , and 1.92% two or more “races” . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 4.23% of the population.

Of the 110 households, 32.7% had children under the age of 18, 50% were run by married couples living together, and 11.8% by single mothers; 34.5% were non-families. 32.7% of the households were singles and 10.9% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.96.

The median age in the city was 41 years. 28.5% of the population were under 18, 3.8% between 18 and 24, 23.8% between 25 and 44, 28.1% between 45 and 64 and 15.8 65 years or older. For every 100 women there were 89.8 men, for those over 18 years of age it was 91.8 men for 100 women.

All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 34,688 and that of families was US $ 45,000. Men had a median income of US $ 31,964 compared to US $ 33,750 for women. The per capita income was US $ 17,487. About 16.2% of families and 20.1% of the total population lived below the poverty line ; this affected 29.8% of those under 18 and 8.9% of those over 65.
