Location of Pomeroy in Garfield County |
Pomeroy is the county seat and the only city with City status in Garfield County , Washington state . As of the 2010 United States Census , Pomeroy had 1,425 residents.
history
A trail of the Nez Percé Indians already existed in prehistoric times. The first reports from whites in the area came from the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1805. Captain Benjamin Bonneville also roamed the future location when he carried out surveys on behalf of the federal government in 1834. An Irish settler named Parson Quinn settled just east of what is now Pomeroy in 1860 and lived there for 40 years. The rancher Joseph M. Pomeroy acquired the land in 1864 and parceled the place in May 1878.
Pomeroy was officially recognized on February 3, 1886. Despite fierce competition with the neighboring cities of Pataha and Asotin in the 1880s, the city has been the county seat of Garfield County since 1882. The fight for the county seat was to be continued in 1883 by both chambers ( Senate and House of Representatives ) of the Washington Territory and via Governor William A. Newell ; he finally reached Congress in 1884 .
On July 18, 1900, a fire destroyed half of the small town's business district (despite a city regulation following the fires of 1890 and 1898 to use fireproof materials in downtown buildings). The reconstruction took two years, as the destroyed buildings were replaced by stone structures - a real building boom for the small community. In 1912 the city voted to outlaw the manufacture or sale of alcohol. This prohibition quickly led to rampant smuggling and corruption, which continued until the adoption of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution in 1933.
On August 21, 2003, a 10-block section was added to the National Register of Historic Places at the instigation of the Pomeroy Historic Committee .
geography
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city occupies a total of 4.61 square kilometers, which does not include water.
