Wasserburg is a district of the city of Günzburg in the Swabian district of Günzburg .

location

The church village is located about one kilometer south of Günzburg on the Günz and a side arm called Butzengünz . It has been structurally linked to the city since the 1970s. The GZ 4 district road crosses it in an east-west direction, and the A 8 motorway runs 1,500 m south . The Mittelschwabenbahn also runs from Günzburg to Mindelheim with the Wasserburg (Günz) stop .

history

The eponymous water castle was built in the Middle Ages between two arms of the Günz and is supposed to be built in 1465 on the orders of Emperor Friedrich III. have been razed to the ground.

After several changes of ownership, Wasserburg went to the Oberstjägermeister Johann Josef Freiherr von Imhof zu Untermeitingen in 1719 . He expanded the existing mill into a free aristocratic residence and had a few houses built. In doing so, he laid the foundation stone for today's village of Wasserburg, which passed into the ownership of the city of Günzburg in 1748.

The previously independent municipality of Wasserburg was incorporated into Günzburg on May 1, 1978 .
