The moated castle Ulenburg is a listed secular building at Buchenallee 16 in Ulenburg , a district of Löhne in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Herford .

Building history and architecture

The water tower was built according to construction documents between the years 1568 to 1570, previously was the Ulenburg not a castle, but a dirt Meierhof . The year 1299, which was added later above the main entrance and on a weather vane, is incorrectly considered the year of construction and does not refer to the Löhner moated castle. However, this date is also mentioned in the handbook of German art monuments and in the monuments list of the city administration.

The sandstone-framed plastered building in the Weser Renaissance style stands on a high base. At the back there is a stair tower . It was built for Hilmar von Quernheim from 1568 to 1569 and expanded from 1652 to 1660 to include the tower on the waterfront, the north wing on the garden side and the dwelling houses .

From 1902 to 1912 the complex was expanded and, above all, the garden side was changed; among other things, the two towers were raised. The portal on the main page and the stone arch bridge were renewed in 1902. A filigree oriel on richly profiled corbels still comes from the original building and is the work of a master Gerdt. It was restored in 1962 . The pillar gables on the narrow sides were created by master Johann Korffmacher.

Use and residents

In 1927 the sanatorium and nursing home Wittekindshof bought the castle and operated a nursing facility there until 2008 for the care of mentally disabled people. In 2014 the castle was transferred from the Wittekindshof Diaconal Foundation to a Yezidi community and has been rebuilt ever since. In the future, an education and study center for Yazidis from all over Europe is to be built in Ulenburg . Conference rooms and a café are to be built on the ground floor, while the Yazidi channel Çira TV and a television studio are to be housed on the upper floor . Guest rooms are set up in the attic. In addition, the building and the adjacent park are to be available again for events such as church services or civic festivals. From spring 2017, weddings should also be possible in the renovated Ulenburg event hall.

Ulenburg moated castle as a bat quarter and FFH area

The attic of the moated castle Ulenburg was designated as an FFH area of Ulenburg Castle in 2004 with a size of 0.11  ha . In the attic there is a nursery for the great mouse- eared bat ( Myotis myotis ).
