The Wassertalkogel ( 3252  m above sea level ) is a high peak in the Geigenkamm south of the Puitkogel . Although it is one of the few mountains on the Geigenkamm that exceeds 3200 meters, it is somewhat in the shadow of its mighty mountain neighbor. Nevertheless, the mountain is visited quite often by mountaineers because the Mainzer Höhenweg leads over its ridge height. From the spacious summit plateau with cairns, the mountain falls with steep but easy-to-climb block flanks to the west into the Pitztal , to the east into the Pollestal. The Wassertalkogel is the last three-thousand-meter peak in the direction of the Rüsselsheimer Hütte that you can cross on the Mainzer Höhenweg. On the western edge of its summit plateau is the Rhineland-Palatinate Bivouac , a spacious bivouac box with 9 beds. The Wassertalkogel takes its name from the northwestern Wassertal , a steep gorge rushed through by water.

Ascent history

The relatively easily accessible summit was probably already climbed in earlier times by locals or hunters from the Pitztal or Ötztal. The first known ascent, however, was carried out by Rudolf L. Kusdas on August 29, 1895. He had climbed up from Mittelberg to Pollesjoch to climb the Puitkogel . On his way to this mountain he crossed the mountains of the Geigenkamm up to the Wassertalkogel. After reaching the summit of the Wassertalkogel, he descended in the direction of the notch between Sonnenkogel and Wassertalkogel.

Routes

  • (From the south): From the Pitztal to the Pitztaler Jöchl. On the Rettenbachferner down and traverse to the north to below the southern Pollesjoch. On an insured path up to the yoke. From the Ötztal via the Rettenbachferner and the insured climb to the Pollesjoch. Now along the Mainzer Höhenweg (marked route, insured with points I) along the ridge, crossing several peaks to the summit.
  • (From the west): From Mandarfen on a path into the steep meadow slopes above the valley floor. Follow the markings past some avalanche barriers to a metal cross (visible from Mandarfen). Next to a wide gully it climbs steeply over grass slopes up to a gradually flattening scree ridge. Up over a steep step in the terrain and beyond it along a rib in the mountain flank, laboriously but slightly up, until you reach the mountain ridge at a notch. Over the wide ridge, slightly in a southerly direction up to the summit.
