history

Water tower in Radebeul-West, right next to it the Friedensburg

The elevated tank to be built for the Niederlößnitz-Kötzschenbroda waterworks association with the decision of 1914 was designed by the Dresden architecture professor and royal building officer Richard Schleinitz , the reinforced concrete construction of the concrete structure comes from the architect and civil engineer Professor Richard Müller . Another participant in the design competition was the architect Oskar Menzel , whose work took third place.

After the building permit for the water tower was granted in 1916 , it was also built by French prisoners of war on the edge of the plateau until 1917, which is why the contemporary name French tower became established. The 39 meter high tower has a round floor plan and a two-tiered conical dome. The reservoir has a capacity of 370 cubic meters and is fed from the pumping station on Burgstrasse .

The tower was damaged in World War II, but was able to be put back into operation in 1947. In 1996/1997 the water tower was completely renovated.

From the plateau in front of it , the Friedrich-August-Höhe , you have a good view of the Elbe Valley , as the base of the tower is about 208  m above sea level. NHN lies. This square was created in 1908 and on the occasion of the visit of King Friedrich August III. named after him; it is 70 meters above the beginning of Burgstraße / corner of Obere Bergstraße , from where you can ascend, and 105 meters above the Elbe.

Due to its exposed location, there are now DSL sector antennas on the tower that operate a free radio network .

The 90th birthday of the tower was celebrated on September 8, 2007 with a water tower festival.
