Guide to history

The signpost to history is since 2005 in publishing Ferdinand Schöningh published book series , the "History of crisis areas" is dedicated to. It was founded by the Military History Research Office and has been published since 2013 (on behalf of the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr ). The illustrated series of publications was created in the Mission Support (MEU) module and, according to its own statements, is aimed at Bundeswehr soldiers on deployments abroad and the politically and historically interested public with general and military historical results .

Individual volumes of the now fifteen-volume series were received largely positively in German feature pages and in academic reviews. Ekkehard Kohrs found for the first three volumes that “numerous experts presented historical and political regional studies in an understandable, clear and illustrated form”. These are currently the “most up-to-date and thorough” on the respective subject areas. According to Wilfried von Bredow , it is a "meritorious series".

For Sven Felix Kellerhoff the series - albeit at a higher level - is in the tradition of the “Pocket Guide to Germany”, which was issued by the United States Department of War in the run-up to Operation Overlord (1944) .
