The white funnel lily ( Paradisea liliastrum ), also called the white paradise lily or Alpine paradise lily , is a species of the agave family (Agavoideae). The genus was named by the Italian botanist Giovanni Mazzucato after its patron, Count Giovanni Paradisi (1760–1826) in Modena .

description

The white funnel lily grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 30 to 50 cm. It has erect, leafless stems . The basal leaves are grass-like, linear, leaf base sheathed, encompassing the stem.

The one-sided, racemose inflorescences are two- to ten-flowered. The bracts are pointed and the stem encompassing. The white, strongly scented flowers are 3 to 5 cm long and funnel-shaped, short-stalked and threefold. The type has six similarly shaped bloom cladding ( tepals ) and six stamens , a stylus with thickened scar (formed from three fused carpels ).

The flowering period is from June to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence

This type of plant is mainly found in the southern, central and western Alps , the Apennines and the Pyrenees from around 800 to 2500 m above sea level.

The lime-loving and warmth-loving plant prefers fatty meadows (golden oat meadows), poor grasslands (fescue grasslands), sunny locations on deep ground.

In Austria, the protected plant species occurs only scattered in south-western Carinthia ( Carnic Alps and Gailtal Alps ).

use

The white funnel lily is rarely used as an ornamental plant for borders. It has been in culture since 1597 at the latest. There are few varieties, for example 'Major' and 'Gigantea', which can grow up to a meter tall and have flowers 5 to 6 centimeters long, and 'Flore pleno' with double flowers.
