history

The White Tower is the oldest building in the city Ahrweiler, he belonged to the Prüm nobility loans and frequently changed hands. Around 1700 the White Tower came into the possession of the Lords of Stein-Kallenfels , who carried out major renovations. After 1689, the Premonstratensians of Steinfeld Abbey moved into the building where they managed their Ahrweiler wineries. The name "White Tower" probably comes from the white robes of the Premonstratensians, because before it was called "Staffeler Tower".

In the 19th century, the White Tower came into the possession of the city of Ahrweiler. In 1908 the German historian and local researcher Peter Joerres set up the “Ahrgau Museum” there, which presented the history and culture of the city of Ahrweiler and the Ahr Valley. After extensive renovation, the "Museum of the City of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler" was opened in 1993.

description

The building consists of a three-storey plastered tower house made of quarry stone with rectangular windows that were only broken into around 1700. The baroque hood is from 1668. The Premonstratensians built a two-storey extension with a mansard roof on the west side in the 18th century . On the ground floor there is still the St. Chapel consecrated to Hermann Joseph von Steinfeld .
