The Weisse Lütschine is the outflow of the Lower Grindelwald Glacier in the Bernese Oberland . It unites in Grindelwald with the Black Lütschine .

Surname

The name Lütschine comes from the Celtic name leucos, leuca , which means "white" or "bright, shiny". This means that the name “Weisse Lütschine”, which is confusingly carried by two rivers in the Lütschine system, is a pleonasm from a literal point of view .

Weisse Lütschine at the exit of the glacier gorge with a view of Grindelwald

The Weisse Lütschine rises as an outflow from the Lower Grindelwald Glacier. Due to the strong shrinking of this glacier, which will probably dissolve in the foreseeable future, the source of the Weisse Lütschine will continue to move upwards in the future.

The stream flows through the glacier gorge ( 1300  m above sea level to 1000  m above sea level ) and passes a marble quarry at the exit. The stream then flows through the valley near Grindelwald and unites with the Black Lütschine, which has about the same amount of water, at an altitude of 958  m above sea level. M.

Catchment area

The catchment area of the river has a size of about 45 km², with the highest point in the catchment area, the Mönch , a height of 4107  m above sea level. M. achieved. Other well-known mountains in the catchment area are Eiger , Mönch , Agassizhorn , Lauteraarhorn and the Schreckhorn .
