Welicoruss is a symphonic black metal band from Novosibirsk , a city in Siberia , Russia . Since 2014 the group has been based in Prague , Czech Republic .

concept

The name of the group "Welicoruss" has a historical association that comes from the name of the north-eastern part of what was then Russia . The name also refers to the Russian revolutionary Chernyshevsky . The band moves with darkness and intensity of their music, especially in the field of Black Metal , but also makes use of traditional folkloric melodies and also uses symphonic elements in their compositions. The lyrics, concept and ideology are inspired by Old Russian and Scandinavian culture, oriental philosophy and pagan heritage.

history

founding

The original solo project was founded by Alexey Boganov in 2002 and several demos were produced by himself before a full music group was formed in 2006. Her first full-length album, called the WinterMoon Symphony , was released in 2008. Their second album Apeiron followed shortly afterwards in 2009. Both albums were released by the Russian record company CD-Maximum before the group broke the contract with the record company in 2009.

Russian time

A video for the song Blizzard was released on YouTube in summer 2008 and Welicoruss played on the same stage with Gorgoroth , Samael , Moonspell and Cynic , including at the "Metal Heads Mission" festival that same year. The band was featured in issue # 47 of the Russian print publication Dark City Magazine, gaining further recognition. In 2009 the band played their first headline tour in sixteen different Russian cities from April 11th to May 24th. The tour was called the "Wintermoon Symphony Tour". The group also played with the legendary Norse viking metal band, Helheim in 2009.

On July 31, 2011, Welicoruss released a free online single called Kharna , which consisted of three new songs, an intro, and an orchestral version of the title track. This release puts the group in a slightly different light, with a more melodic style and an all-encompassing writing process.

In October 2011 the group signed a distribution agreement with the US- based record company "Domestic Genocide Records". On December 12th 2011 Welicoruss presented her new music video for Kharnha in the "Rock City Club" in Novosibirsk . The video was filmed by Imperium Studios under the direction of Alexander Tsurupa and Alexander Semko. It features classic Russian - Scandinavian themes and the participation of the historical reconstruction group "Steel Fist" and model Sofia Sonador.

In November 2012, the new video Sons of the North was published on YouTube . Directed by Alexey Boganov and directed by "EYE Cinema" Studio, it's about a man who accidentally woke up the sons of the north; who in turn were killed by a witch and are now looking for vengeance.

Moving to Europe

In 2013 the band founder Alexey Boganov realized that Welicoruss had reached their maximum possibilities in the eastern parts of Russia and in autumn 2013 he moved to Prague and decided to assemble a new formation there. Soon the Serbian guitarist Gojko Marić, the Russian bassist Dmitriy Zhikharevich and the Czech drummer David Urban joined the band, turning Welicoruss into an international band.

In 2014 the band played at the Arkona concerts in Prague and Brno and also took part in the festivals “Made of Metal” and “Under the Dark Moon” in the Czech Republic . The new album Az esm ("I am" from Old Russian ) was officially released on January 31st. The album was created and recorded in Novosibirsk , but some songs were re-recorded and slightly changed in Prague. To support this album, the band began their first European "Az Esm Tour", with concerts in Germany , Austria , Poland , Slovenia , Switzerland , France and the Netherlands .

In February 2015, Legacy , one of the largest German metal magazines, published an article about the band Welicoruss, which led to a high rating for the new album.
