Geographical location
Wellsville is located in northeast Kansas, about 60 kilometers southwest of Kansas City . Hillsdale Lake is to the southeast .

history
The Wellsville area was first settled in the 1850s. The town itself was founded by Shoot, Root and Wells and named after Wells. With the completion of the construction of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1870, the city continued to grow. The first development plan was published by PO Elder on May 1, 1872 and accepted as an official city map. The city was registered as such on July 8, 1884.

As of the last 2000 census, Wellsville had 1,606 people in 636 households and 435 families. The population density was 738.2 per km². There were 666 residential units with an average density of 306.1 per km². The population consisted of:
