action
The Parisian bookseller Mathias is fired after he treated an unfriendly customer unfriendly. He remembers his friend Antoine, who lives in London and who only recently offered him a job. In London, the owner of a French literature shop wants to retire and is looking for a successor. Since Mathias' ex-wife Valentine and their daughter Emilie also live in London, Mathias spontaneously decides to move. In London, he quickly becomes part of a small, tight-knit community: Antoine and his son Louis live next door, the friendly café owner Yvonne always has an open ear and the flower seller Sophie is always ready to help. In addition to Mathias, Valentine is also rearranging her life; she leaves Emilie with Mathias to go back to Paris herself, where she wants to work in an embassy.
Because Mathias and Antoine and their two children get along very well, Mathias suggests that both families move in together. After thinking about it for a while, the cleaning-mad Antoine agrees, under the following conditions: no nannies, no women’s stories and no staying away longer than 1 a.m. One day in the bookstore, Mathias meets young Audrey, who shortly afterwards frees him from a precarious situation for Mathias who is not afraid of heights. Later the two of them meet again in the children's schoolyard and Audrey has to bring him back to earth from a great height. The two then arrange to meet, even if Mathias mistakenly assumes that Audrey is the children's class teacher. Only later does he find out that Audrey is actually a journalist.
The relationship between Mathias and Audrey does not meet with much approval from Antoine and the two men initially quarrel, but reconcile again at the instigation of the children. Audrey, on the other hand, is irritated when Valentine returns to London and apparently meets up with Mathias again. He can convince her that she was wrong. A dinner with Antoine and the children should bind them closer together, but the children and Antoine behave so emphatically family-like that Audrey leaves. She accuses him of having built an illusory world and of not even being sure in the end whether he loves her. Audrey no longer contacts him and Mathias realizes that he has missed an opportunity. He tries to convince Antoine that neither of them saw clearly: Sophie had Antoine write love letters for an imaginary lover in the past that were actually meant for himself. The love between the café owner Yvonne and her guest Mac Enzie also remains unspoken, but here forever: Yvonne dies before both can get together. Antoine and Sophie speak up and become a couple; and Mathias and Audrey also get together when he climbs a tree not far from their apartment and needs your help to get back on the ground.

criticism
For the film-dienst , the film was a “predictably staged romantic comedy that is solidly entertaining”, but only reveals a certain independence through the “caricature of French-English relations.” Cinema , on the other hand, found that the film was not as trivial as it is the book, which is mainly due to the actors, and summarized: "As refreshing and light as a cool glass of French white wine."
