Wentzinger High School

The Wentzinger-Gymnasium is a general education high school in the city of Freiburg im Breisgau . In addition to a scientific and a linguistic profile , it also has a music profile as one of 38 schools in Baden-Württemberg and a bilingual profile in French, which leads to the double Abibac . At the moment around 1000 students are taught at the Wentzinger Gymnasium, most of whom come from the city of Freiburg and the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district . The name of the grammar school refers to the Freiburg artist and honorary citizen Johann Christian Wentzinger (1710–1797). From the 2013/14 school year, the school returned to the nine-year course. G8 trains are no longer offered at all. This applies to all new registrations for the 5th grade.

History and location

Wentzinger Gymnasium main entrance

In 1972 the first phase of the current Wentzinger School was moved into. The entire complex was completed two years later. It includes the second largest grammar school and the largest secondary school in Freiburg. The two schools work independently and under their own management. However, they share the scientific , musical and technical rooms as well as the sports halls and outdoor sports facilities. You work together cooperatively in many areas and in many decisions.

The building is located within a publicly accessible local recreation area, where the Baden-Württemberg State Horticultural Show took place in 1986 . The secondary school is located in the southern part and the grammar school in the northern part . The sports halls, the outdoor sports area and the Westbad , which is heavily used by schools, are in the immediate vicinity. There is also a branch of the city library in the building.

Well-developed bike paths lead towards Landwasser , Lehen , Betzenhausen and the city center . School buses or public buses (line 10/36/7212 / Tuniberg Express) ensure a connection to all western parts of the city, to Umkirch , Hochdorf, Tuniberg and March . The " Neue Messe " stop of the Breisgau S-Bahn is just a few minutes' walk away . With the 2013/2014 school year, the Wentzinger-Gymnasium is the first public high school in Freiburg to offer G9 classes again after the introduction of the Abitur after class 12 .

Organization and offer

The Wentzinger-Gymnasium offers different languages as well as a music and a natural science profile. In the 5th grade you have the choice between English and French as well as French bilingual as the first foreign language. The music profile can also be selected from the 5th grade. The second foreign language is chosen in the 6th grade: Students with English as their first foreign language have the choice between French and Latin as their second foreign language. Students with French or French bilingual as their first foreign language must choose English as their second foreign language.

From the 9th grade onwards, students have to choose an offered profile. The linguistic profile offers Spanish as a third foreign language. In the natural science profile, students attend the subject of natural science and technology (NWT). It is also possible to choose music as a profile subject, provided that one was already in the music profile in the lower level or can prove a special musical talent. The subjects mentioned are considered major subjects and are taught for four hours. From the upper level onwards, students can put together their main subjects themselves in accordance with Baden-Württemberg regulations.

The Wentzinger-Gymnasium works with the Freiburg Seminar for Mathematics and Natural Sciences .

Music profile

The Wentzinger Gymnasium offers children interested in music the opportunity to attend a special educational program with increased music lessons. The music lessons in the music classes are primarily intended to arouse joy and interest in music and to guide the understanding of music in its diverse manifestations - both in practical use (singing, playing instruments, improvisation, movement, etc.) as well as in encounters with music from different epochs and cultures. A continuous music theory course is also added. In addition to the lessons in the class, the students can participate in the working groups (currently choir, orchestra, big band, rhythm). Learning to play an instrument is desirable, but not a requirement for visiting the musical train.

In grades 5 to 7 there are three or four hours of music per week, with musically creative projects being added. In grades 8 to 10, music is a profile subject and thus a regular core subject (such as a third foreign language). In the upper school it is finally possible to qualify for the Abitur with a music profile course.
