The work of St. John of Avila ( en . : Work of Saint John of Avila ; es . : Obra de San Juan de Avila ) is a lay apostolic association of believers in the Roman Catholic Church . It was founded in Valencia ( Spain ) in 1919 and, after episcopal recognition in 1962, recognized in 1994 as an international association of believers under papal law. The plant has 102 associate members spread across two continents in 11 countries.

history

Don José Soto Chuliá (1887–1975) founded the female company in 1919 in Valencia. The unmarried members were women who saw their calling in spiritual motherhood. Don Chuliá wanted to create small groups of believers within the parishes to witness their religious life. After this movement had spread over several dioceses of Spain, the work was canonically recognized as Pia unio by the Archbishop of Valencia Marcelino Olaechea Loizaga SDB in 1962 , after which the expansion continued beyond the borders of Spain. On March 12, 1994, the work of St. John of Ávila (1499–1569) received the decree of recognition from the Pontifical Council for the Laity . The international association of believers under papal law is also included in the official register .

Self-image

The aim of the work is the formation of apostolic groups in the parishes. The basis of spirituality is the promise of baptism , which is to be realized in one's own area of ​​life and in one's job; it is characterized by the life of virtues , the reception of the sacraments and personal commitment. The formation of the members includes the study of the Holy Scriptures , knowledge of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council , observance of the Magisterium of the Church , knowledge of the scriptures of the saints and knowledge of the catechism .

Organization and expansion

The member base is made up of the associated members who have made a definitive or temporary religious promise and the postulants . The participants in the apostolic groups are affiliated with the work without any legal ties. The associated members are given as 102, which are distributed in Europe in one country and in South America in 10 countries, the apostolic groups number about 10,000 employees.
