life and work

After completing his school education in Wollishofen , he started an apprenticeship as a graphic designer at an advertising agency, where he worked for two years. He then attended the arts and crafts school in Zurich, where he attended the graphics class for the next four years .

He first came into contact with this satirical magazine through the Nebelspalters competition, and from 1937 he became a regular draftsman. In addition to the Nebelspalter, Werner Büchi also put numerous drawings on paper for other publications, often over several decades. For this, the invention of belonging Brüggli Puur for the newspaper Brückenbauer We of Migros , the cartoon series Juxli for Youth Week , humorous drawings for Swiss Eulenspiegel calendar for which he contributed over 40 years of regular contributions, the TCS , the Schweizer Illustrierte Newspaper (predecessor of Schweizer Illustrierte ), covers for Schweizer Spiegel and newspapers such as Die Weltwoche , the Wochen-Zeitung and the Tages-Anzeiger , for which he invented the figure of Heiri Zürcher.

Werner Büchi also illustrated numerous books, including the popular youth books by Heiner Gross such as 3: 0 for the beards and tumult on the Kyburg or Mischa Djamans Mau, the Katzenkönig . With the departure of the illustrator Robert Lips from the most famous Swiss comic figure Globi , Werner Büchi was chosen in 1975 as the new illustrator for the annual book series. He drew Globi's brilliant idea in 1975 and Globi, the daring inventor, in 1977 . Since his secondary characters leaned too much on his own drawing style and did not orientate themselves too much on the guidelines of Robert Lips, the Ringier publishing house was looking for a new illustrator for the Globi series and finally found him in the person of Peter Heinzer .

Werner Büchi simply signed most of his drawings with his initials WB. He often wrote the texts for his caricatures himself.

The estate, previously owned by her daughter Lilly Brodersen-Büchi, includes 1,300 original drawings.

He found his final resting place in the communal grave at the Manegg cemetery in Zurich .
