Career

Beginning

From the amateur camp at TuRU Düsseldorf , the 20-year-old moved to Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Regionalliga West in 1967 . In the first round in 1967/68 he came in sixth place in the table with Fortuna and was not yet part of the regular line-up. The junior player played the first league game in the regional league on August 27, 1967 in a 5-2 home win on the third match day against Wuppertaler SV . Wolfgang Fahrian guarded the goal of Fortuna Düsseldorf and TuRu's talent was used as a half-forward. This changed from the round 1968/69 when the new coach Otto Knefler built on the defensive qualities of Werner Kriegler and led Fortuna to fourth place with the regular player Kriegler. In the second Knefler year, fourth place was repeated and coach Heinz Lucas was committed to the 1970/71 round . In the meantime, Kriegler was an integral part of the Fortuna defense and was therefore a member of the team that won the runner-up in the Regionalliga West with 56:12 points tied behind the champions VfL Bochum and thus moved into the Bundesliga promotion round in 1971. Fortuna prevailed against Borussia Neunkirchen , FC St. Pauli , 1. FC Nürnberg and Wacker 04 Berlin and got promoted to the Bundesliga. Werner Kriegler played 96 games with three goals in the regional league. The standard defense of the promotion round was: Franke / Woyke in goal; Köhnen, Lungwitz, Kriegler and Klaus Iwanzik in defense.

Football Bundesliga, 1971 to 1977

In the six years of the Bundesliga from 1971 to 1977, the defense specialist, who played mostly pre-stoppers, completed 183 appearances with four goals. In 1973 and 1974 he belonged with Fortuna Düsseldorf as a two-time third in the absolute top of the Bundesliga. In 1974 and 1975, international appearances in the UEFA Cup were added to Werner Kriegler's career. He was in the matches against Næstved IF, FC Admira / Wacker, Lokomotive Leipzig, AC Turin , Vasas Győr and FC Amsterdam and also showed his qualities as a defensive player. In the DFB Cup in 1971 Werner Kriegler moved into the semi-finals against FC Bayern Munich with Fortuna Düsseldorf after successes against Werder Bremen , Wuppertaler SV and Borussia Mönchengladbach . With 0: 1 goals the entry into the final was missed on May 12, 1971. Outstanding players in the successful years 1973 and 1974 were: Klaus Budde , Heiner Baltes , Dieter Brei , Reiner Geye , Dieter Herzog , Egon Köhnen , Wolfgang Seel and Gerd Zewe .

End of career, 1977

After 26 appearances in the 1976/77 season under coach Dietrich Weise - Fortuna placed 12th - Werner Krieger ended his career with Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga in 1977 at the age of 31 and went back to the amateur camp at VfL Gevelsberg . On April 22, 1977, he played the last Bundesliga game in a 2-0 away win at Werder Bremen on the side of Baltes, Hickersberger and Zimmermann.
