Kuhnt owes his only international game as a goalkeeper on August 31, 1924 in Berlin in front of 25,000 spectators against Sweden (1: 4) to irreconcilable clashes between 1.FC Nürnberg and SpVgg Fürth, with the result that the football players of these two clubs are not in the wanted to play the German national team and Kuhnt stood between the posts of the national team instead of the former German goalkeeper Heinrich Stuhlfauth from Nuremberg. According to reports at the time, the otherwise calm Werner Kuhnt could not shed his nervousness during the entire game. It was the first international match of the 1924/25 season and the DFB made six debutants, including Werner Kuhnt, who was 2 months before his 31st birthday.
