Werner Maier's work initially comprised primarily graphic works, drawings and etchings. He dealt with the representation of movement and time in the medium of drawing, which is already expressed in the titles of a series from 1996/1997 ( e.g. three minutes , thirteen seconds ). He is interested in reduction and abstraction processes (e.g. the Köpf series , 1998) and the spatial effect of lines in interaction with the drawing surface. "Werner Maier is interested in the perception of space, which opens up from two-dimensionality through the power of drawing. Freed from everything epic, he plumbs with a pencil to what extent the reduction can be carried out". The various drawing materials and etching techniques (e.g. aquatint) play a role here. Since the 2000s, Maier has increasingly turned to painting, initially to watercolors, in two-dimensional, abstract color surfaces, whereby the overlapping of the surfaces also resulted in linear-graphic zones.

Werner Maier's pictures and graphics have been exhibited since 1985. a. in the Albertina in Vienna and the graphic collection in Munich.
