Life

The son of Dr. Franz Hoffmann, Real Secret Upper Government Councilor (the highest official status of the Prussian government and worthy of being addressed as "Excellency") in the Ministry of Trade and Industry and with Dr. Bill Drews editor of the third, completely revised edition of the Concise Dictionary of the Prussian Administration (1928), developed an affinity for the stage and film early on. His father had already played Prince Otto von Bismarck in 1922 for a documentary film entitled Dogs in the Lives of Great Men . The father also gave his son the approval for his artistic plans after he had studied literary history , philosophy and economics for six semesters .

Malbran, who took the name of a French Huguenot ancestor as his stage name for his own work, initially worked as an actor, operetta tenor and director on Berlin theaters. In 1928 he inherited a movie theater in Grunewald. Shortly afterwards he moved to the Titania Palace as arranger of the stage show. From 1930 to 1931 he finally headed the Ufa-Theater Universum before he became head of the Berlin Gloria-Palast . In 1936 he left this important movie theater and instead turned to the film industry . For nine years he headed the production group at Tobis-Tonbild-Syndikat AG. Malbran developed the formats Der Trichter and Ufa-Potpourri , for which mostly trimmings from the newsreel were processed, and was responsible for the production of seventy cultural and advertising films. As a production manager, he oversaw feature films such as Wolfgang Staudte's acrobat schö-ö-ö-n , one speaks of Jacqueline and crooks in tails . He also wrote the lyrics for the Hans Albers film Under Hot Heaven . In addition, Malbran was in charge of Tobis' studio and director's studio. There he is said to have discovered directors Volker von Collande , Hans Müller , Wolfgang Staudte and Peter Pewas as well as Claude Farell , Gerti Soltau and Claus Holm .

On October 26, 1924, he married Elisabeth Paula Tolkmitt, daughter of the goods manager Paul Tolkmitt in Groß Samrodt, East Prussia. His daughter Marlis Carmen Hoffmann, born on October 17, 1925 in Berlin, took up her father's stage name in her career as an actress and became known as " Lisca Malbran ". (See IMDB Lisca Malbran for films). She died on June 6, 1946 in Copenhagen , Denmark.

After the Second World War, Malbran was able to build on his earlier career almost seamlessly. So he opened a cinema in his hometown of Berlin and in 1948 took up a position as a dialogue author and director for the International Film Union GmbH Remagen . In this capacity, he bought among others German version of Laurel & Hardy -Komödie line long . Later he also worked as a dubbing writer and director in Hamburg, for example for the Rhythmoton Film production for the war drama Wenn das Herz speaks by Compton Bennett and for Synchron Film GmbH Hamburg for Carlo Pontis Europa 51 .
